Kingston Creative will celebrate Jamaica’s rich culinary, cultural and natural history at the monthly Last Sunday’s Artwalk, set to take place on Sunday October 28, starting at 11:00am at F&B Downtown/Swiss Stores, 107 Harbour Street.
This month’s staging will see, for the first time, the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) open its doors to visitors for an exclusive and entertaining “insider’s tour” of Jamaica’s museum network – free of charge.
Institute of Jamaica Deputy Director, Nicole Patrick Shaw, said; “The Institute’s mandate is to support the development of the arts in Jamaica and we believe that the Last Sunday’s Artwalk and Market Street supports our efforts. We are thrilled to be part of this month’s event and hope to see hundreds turn out to learn about Jamaica’s heritage and enjoy themselves in the process.”
The National Museum contains over 17,000 historic, ethnographic and archaeological artefacts from the prehistoric to the contemporary era. The tour will be infused with contemporary dance, art and music provided by JamOrchestra, Metroparadise by visual artist Tiana Anglin, Rik Jam, Mr. Excellence from Trenchtown, Vinyl specialist DJ Yumi and emerging solo artist Kenardo. The recent exhibition on Breadfruit that took centre stage at the 2018 Heritage Fest will be open, as will the Taino, People Mysteries and Stories, Ubuntu and Beyond Fashion exhibitions which are all well suited to a younger audience.
There will also be an opportunity to tour two new exhibitions at the Music Museum; Curating Music: Building a National Collection and Black Aesthetics and Cultural Activism: Garvey as Cultural Muse. Both tours will be hosted by IOJ’s Musical Director, Herbie Miller. Miller is an icon in Jamaica’s music landscape; from managing reggae legend, Peter Tosh, to writing and publishing numerous songs and now leading the development of the Music Museum.
The emerging Downtown Kingston Art District is the most recent member of the Global Cultural Districts Network, headquartered in London. Funding for the District’s development will be sought through the upcoming #First50 campaign where local corporates can invest in culture and the regeneration of Kingston.
