Ka’ana Resort, Belize
Ka’ana Resort in San Ignacio, Belize, offers several culinary offerings that allow for an immersive experience into the indigenous culture. Examples include a Maya cooking class in an onsite outpost whose design is inspired by a traditional Maya kitchen. Guests are taught to prepare staple dishes including tamales, tortillas and caldo. To provide as authentic of an experience as possible, the class is led by Maya descendants who use ancient methods and tools like the fogon, a type of stove.
In addition, guests of Ka’ana can choose to go on an offsite Maya Cacao farm tour where travelers get a hands-on lesson in harvesting cacao beans and the process that goes into making chocolate.
For those that appreciate agriculture, Ka’ana features a Gardening 101 excursion which includes a guided tour through the property’s organic two-acre garden. You have the opportunity to harvest an in-season crop such rare purple corn and you get a lesson in seeding with eggshells recycled from the onsite restaurant from La Ceiba.
